Second year Start Strong ATL youth leader Zabian Head attended the NOW Encounter leadership training at The King Center here in Atlanta as part of his Start Strong ATL training.
He’s one of our talented writers, and he composed this spoken word piece to present on his last day.

The Start Strong ATL Youth Leaders are participating in a GREAT experience during their summer training!
Atlanta’s King Center offers a youth training program called the NOW Encounter.
Our Youth Leaders joined other teens from around the city taking part in the training for an incredible experience learning about civil rights and nonviolence approaches to conflict!
Check out Talethea and her partner rapping about peaceful conflict resolution!

Your heart is broken.
It’s TERRIBLE. You can’t sleep. You barely eat. All you do is listen to sad songs and old pictures.
I know it’s hard to imagine that you’ll ever feel better, but the good news is that there’s a cure!
TIME. Time is the only thing that will help.
So try starting small. Breathe in and out, then do it again. When you get the breathing thing down, think about your next meal. Focus on one bite, then the next bite. After that, go for a walk. Think about putting one foot in front of the other. Then go to bed and do it all over.
Time will help! When you’re up to it, spend some time on yourself! See the movie your boyfriend/girlfriend didn’t want to see with you, and call some friends. Watch your favorite TV shows, play your favorite sports, and before long you’ll be back to your old self.
Just give it time!

You graduated high school and you’re on to college! Congratulations! What a great accomplishment and a huge step for your future.
But what about your girlfriend or boyfriend who will be attending another college in the fall?
Check out some of your options:
1) Have a great summer and part as friends in the fall
This could be great, because you have the fun and support over the summer. Someone to prepare with, knock out that summer reading list with, shop for supplies with. But it will be sad knowing that a break up is in your future.
2) Break up now, knowing you’ll have to eventually
As sad as this could be, it can be nice to have the summer to yourself. Just avoid the drama zone!
3) Stick with it, then do long distance
If your relationship is strong enough, go for it! But be careful. Don’t hide in your dorm room to call your boo when you could be making new friends or studying!
What are you going to do this summer with your sweetheart? Think about what’s best for you!

Friends who went off to college or work last year are probably coming back to town. That could mean some old flames!
Do you plan on reconnecting with an old boyfriend or girlfriend?
Think for a second, and talk it out!
1) Why did you break up in the first place? Are those reasons still true?
2) What do you want out of the relationship?
3) Is this the best thing for you?
And don’t forget, you can have fun in the summer focusing on you, too!
